This site is a researched argument about better representation for Black Women in the media. From my personal experience as a young Black girl, I often found myself heavily effected by societal expectations of beauty that were portrayed the media. Growing up with these influential images was a struggle because I knew that I never could become the treasured White (or light-skinned) Woman with straight hair and a thin figure that were popular tv and film personalities. I had to fight, and still continue to fight, everyday to be able to truly love my dark skin, coarse hair, and curvy figure. This background makes me passionate about this topic. Little girls should embrace who they are, what they look like, and who they are becoming. Without the inspiration of proper role models, personal growth and evolution can be difficult.
We need to think about the ways that the media is portraying Black Women and the affects of those portrayals. Within this argument, I discuss how the media is harmful to Black Women, confront possible counter-arguments, exemplify the positive influences in the media, and suggest further analysis of other media effects. I also included various clips from movies and television, referenced other studies, and offered some examples of what better representation looks like.
